Antique Caucasian Shirvan Rug, 255 × 152 cm, Circa 1900
£1950
Origin: Shirvan, Eastern Caucasus
Age: Approx. 120 years old (circa 1900)
Size: 255 × 152 cm
A striking antique Caucasian Shirvan rug, hand-knotted in the eastern Caucasus circa 1900. The design features a sequence of bold, contrasting medallions set within a richly patterned field, framed by strongly geometric borders typical of classic Shirvan weaving. The drawing is confident and rhythmic, giving the rug a powerful graphic presence.
Time and use have softened the original colours into a highly attractive palette of muted pinks, warm reds, and gentle yellows, balanced by darker outlines that retain clarity and structure. The rug shows even, honest wear consistent with age and remains in good, usable condition. A strong example of Caucasian tribal weaving with excellent decorative impact.
